Recommendations “Strengthening Epidemiology Education in the Veterinary Field for the One Health Era”

The Japanese Society of Antimicrobials for Animals has expressed its support for the recommendations titled “Strengthening Epidemiology Education in the Veterinary Field for the One Health Era,” which were jointly released by the Society of Farm Animal in Infectious Diseases, the Japan Society of Veterinary Epidemiology, Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI), and the Japanese Society of Veterinary Science.   The recommendations were also submitted to Technical Education Division, Higher Education Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and Japanese Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education.   As the interconnections between humans, animals, and the environment become increasingly complex, there is a growing need not only to address livestock infectious diseases, zoonoses, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), but also to respond appropriately to tumors and lifestyle-related diseases that are on the rise in companion animal practice and other areas of clinical veterinary medicine. In all of these areas, an epidemiological perspective is now essential to support evidence-based decision-making and action.   In response to this situation, the recommendations set out future directions for epidemiology education in Japan’s veterinary field. They call for strengthening both lectures and practical training so that veterinarians can apply epidemiological knowledge from the first day after graduation, as well as for enhancing educational structures to foster professionals who can contribute actively on the international stage in line with the One Health approach.

政府提言「ワンヘルス時代を支える獣医学分野の疫学教育の在り方」

動物用抗菌剤研究会は、家畜感染症学会、獣医疫学会、日本医療政策機構、日本獣医学会の4団体が公表した提言「ワンヘルス時代を支える獣医学分野の疫学教育の在り方」に賛同いたしました。 なお、本提言は令和8年6月19日文部科学省 高等教育局 専門教育課、全国大学獣医学関係代表者協議会（全獣協）に提出されています。 近年、人・動物・環境の相互関係がより複雑化するなかで、家畜感染症や人獣共通感染症、薬剤耐性（AMR）などの課題に加え、伴侶動物を含む臨床獣医学の現場で増加する腫瘍や生活習慣病への対応にも、疫学的視点が不可欠となっています。 こうした状況を踏まえ、4団体は我が国の獣医学分野における疫学教育が目指すべき将来の方向性を取りまとめました。本提言では、獣医学分野における疫学教育の一層の充実が必要であるとの認識に立ち、卒後1日目から疫学を応用できる獣医学人材を育成するための講義と実習の在り方や、国際的に通用する人材育成の強化に向けた体制整備について提案しています。
